Care guide

We want you to love your Scaramanga leather satchel, messenger bag or leather travel bag or leather accessory. So to keep it looking its best here are some suggestions and recommendations.

  • All our leather products are handmade and your new leather bag may be subject to a natural variation in size and colour. The “Hunter” (distressed leather finish) and black buffalo leather hides used for our bags have been processed and tanned to give the finished leather an antique / vintage look and feel.
  • This means each hide may be slightly different from the next, e.g. the grain on the hide may be a little uneven or have natural marks on it and the colour may even vary. This together with the hand finishing means that no two leather bags look exactly the same. The leather will naturally soften as you use it.
  • Avoid getting your leather item wet and keep it in a cool dry place. Should it get very wet simply dry it in a warm room - but do not place the bag directly onto a source of heat like a radiator as that may cause it to crack.
  • We’re confident your bag will last for years. We’ve been using similar bags everyday for over eight years and they’re still going strong!
  • We cannot be held liable for any damage that is caused to a bag after a cream or oil has been applied by yourself, and we cannot refund or exchange a bag that has had such a treatment applied.
  • Please be aware that the natural dyes in the leather may transfer across to lighter clothing and vice-versa - we cannot accept responsibility when this occurs.
  • Our black Hunter leather has been specially tanned and finished to have a distressed vintage leather effect, which means over time and with exposure to sunlight the leather's initial black colour will fade to a grey or dark aubergine colour.
  • Our canvas is hand dyed in small batches and then waxed, which may result in variations in colour and shading. Creases, folds and light distressed marks may be also be visible in the canvas.

For day to day maintenance a dab of sunflower/vegetable oil, on a dry, clean sponge or cloth rubbed over the bag evenly will work to re-oil the leather and also protects the leather from cracking as well as sealing the leather for mild weather resistance. This will also help if you have got small water marks on the leather.

Small scratches can be removed by rubbing them gently with your finger, as the natural oils on your hands will work into the leather. For larger scratches and marks apply a tiny amount of oil to the mark, let it soak in for a few minutes and then wipe the excess away with a clean soft cloth. It may make the leather initially appear darker but this is just because the oil is soaking in.

Your Scaramanga bag should be able to withstand an occasional rain shower and ordinary wear and tear but is not waterproofed. To further protect your bag you can waterproof your bag yourself by buying a waterproofer such as the Collonil Carbon PRO Waterproofer, or even a standard hiking boot waterproofer.

Your new bag may give off a leather odour for a week or two, which is not unusual for a natural leather product. If you find it a little overpowering we suggest putting a sachet of nice smelling lavender etc into the bag, for a few days and that should help. Some of our customers have recommended using a little oil (vegetable oil or even an essential oil such as Mandarin or Lavender oil) on a clean soft cloth and wiping over the bag evenly, as this can also help with the smell.

Our canvas is waxed, which makes it weatherproof, so it will withstand an occasional rain shower and ordinary wear and tear very well. If your canvas gets dirty, simply dampen a cloth and wipe it clean.

If your zip has started to come undone, you can try this simple method to mend it. Make sure the zip is open all the way to the end. Take the zip pull in one hand and using a small, ideally pointed, pair of pliers, press down firmly on one side of the zip pull (on the metal itself). You are just trying to mesh the teeth together a little so do not press too firmly. Then repeat this on the other side of the zip pull. This should allow you to pull the zip once more.

So far every girl and boy at the Sanskrit Kotra Yojna School, Ajmer, Rajasthan gets a lunch at school every day through the Akshaya Patra Foundation.

What are the Features of our Messenger Bags?

Our 15-inch messenger bags are made from distressed buffalo hunter leather and due to the natural dyeing process, each bag has its own unique marks engrained into it. Our messenger bags have a stylish and sturdy construction with double stitching and tough grey canvas lining. The main compartment contains a zipped side pocket and there is an extra zipped pocket on the front, which makes organising your items, dare we say, fun. We've recently updated our bags with brass hardware that beautifully compliments the patina of our hunter leather. When we talk about modern functionality, we really mean it. We've added magnetic fasteners for an easy yet secure opening/closing, and the shoulder strap is 58", giving you flexibility on the length you want to carry it.

How you decide to use our messenger bag is up to you. They are perfectly adaptable making them great for both professional and casual events. We've designed them to fit a 15-inch laptop, and A4 documents for work or you could store your favourite book, and a journal and enjoy a coffee in the park at the weekend. Our bags have adjustable straps and are gender-neutral – like all of our pieces, they are designed for anyone who wants to use them. At Scaramanga we love a vintage aesthetic, meaning our messenger bags have been carefully reimagined with modern functionality whilst paying homage to the original courier bags of the 1950s.

Our History with Leather Bags

We started making leather bags 13 years ago. This venture began after we visited North-East India and found a beautifully worn leather satchel in a Bazaar. We loved the leather used for the bag because of the character ingrained into it. So, we began looking for local artisans to make the bags that we designed. At Scaramanga, since the beginning, we've offered our customers authentic, vintage and antique furniture. With our bags, we wanted to inject the splendour of vintage style with the modern functionality and practicality of contemporary techniques. That's why our 15-inch messenger bags encompass both.

Why Buffalo Hunter Leather?

We use buffalo hunter leather because it's a semi-vegetable tanned leather. This means it's dyed using organic materials such as bark. It's an environmentally-friendly choice compared to the harmful chemicals used to dye other leather types. Vegetable tanning is a traditional skill which takes around 40-60 days to develop. The process provides the leather with a natural aromatic smell and requires skilled craftspeople to complete it successfully. Vegetable tanning is the superior choice when it comes to the longevity of your products. Chrome-tanned leathers are treated with acrylic varnish which causes them to crack, peel and split after just a few years. In contrast, your vegetable-tanned leather bag will soften over time, meaning it develops a lovely patina as they age. Semi-vegetable tanned leathers keep the character within the hides, meaning that every bag you buy from Scaramanga has its own unique pattern to it.

History of Messenger Bags

Messenger bags, also known as courier bags, satchels and carryalls are a traditional bag design originally used by Post Office workers to carry mail. Pony Express staff, people who delivered mail on horseback, and bike couriers were some of the first people to use this style of bag. The bag was first created in the 1950s by a company called De Martini Globe Canvas which designed the bag for telephone line workers. They were functional and spacious to accommodate all of their tools needed on the job. The bags were first made of cotton and canvas and lined with a waterproof fabric. They had inside pockets to store documents and receipts and the bag was fastened with two straps. At this time, these bags were not publicly available, they were only made for specific companies. During the 1970s and 80s, bike couriers began using the De Martini messenger bags and De Martini began making messenger bags for a whole host of different companies, offering a different colour to each company which made the colour of the bag synonymous with the company. In 1984, it was a man called John Peters who enhanced the messenger bag, offering it into the fashion world. Peters' bags were made with nylon and had buckles making them extremely stylish and practical and available for everyone.

Handmade by Expert Artisans

Our bags are handmade by a small workshop in Kolkata, India. We have worked with them for 14 years. Their highly skilled bag makers use traditional tools and techniques.

Taking care of your bag

We want you to love your handmade Scaramanga leather bag. So to keep it looking its best here are some suggestions and recommendations.

Leather care guide

We’re confident your Scaramanga bag will last for years. A few tips to follow to keep it in tip-top condition View the full product care guide.

Caring for your leather bag

If you spill something on your Scaramanga bag use a dry cloth to clean it off. Use a damp cloth for marks that remain. Don't use abrasive soaps or household cleaning detergents because they will dry out the leather. You may notice a little dryness to parts of the bag after you have been using the bag for a while. A simple treatment with a natural leather cream or wax. We recommend Effax Leather Balm or Leather Genie Balsam. We have been using both for many years, but do test your chosen cream on a discreet area like the bottom first to ensure you're happy with the result.

Over time the colour of your bag or accessory will darken, especially in bright light. So avoid leaving your bag out in the sun. Our leather has not been artificially coated so is not totally waterproof, so if your bag does get wet wipe it with a dry cloth and just let it dry naturally. Don't use a heater or place your bag next to a radiator as this will dry out the leather.

Our bags are semi-veg tanned using fewer chemicals, to make a more natural leather. This means that the leather will age beautifully. Each bag will age differently so will be totally unique to you. That's why we use Hunter leather to make our bags.

Creasing and scratches

We use Hunter leather which is infused with oils and waxes. This means that when the leather is folded or creased or scratched lighter lines are visible.
Creased leather will usually return to its darker colour in time and scratches can be removed by rolling the leather gently between your thumb and forefinger until the leather lightens. In time the lighter leather will then take a darker shade.
Bigger scratches can be dabbed and wiped with a little leather cream/wax. The leather may make the leather initially appear darker but this is just because the balm/cream is soaking in.

Caring for your waxed canvas bag or accessory

We use a waxed canvas, which makes it shower-resistant. So it will withstand an occasional shower. If it does get wet simply allow it to dry naturally. Over time the colour of your bag or accessory will darken, especially in bright light. Our canvas has not been artificially coated so is not totally waterproof, so if your bag does get wet just let it dry naturally. Don't use a heater or place your bag next to a radiator as this will dry out the canvas.
If you spill something on your waxed canvas bag use a dry cloth to clean it off. Use a damp cloth for marks that remain. Don't use abrasive soaps or household cleaning detergents because they break down the wax coating on the canvas. You may notice a little dryness to parts of the bag after you have been using the bag for a while. The canvas can be treated with a rub-on waxed canvas treatment like Rydale or Hoggs of Fife Dressing for Waxed Cotton or with a Nixwax Fabric Proof spray.

There may be some wax transfer from your bag/accessory onto lighter clothing or textiles.
