Men in Britain carrying bags is nothing new. It is well documented that leather satchels were worn by Roman soldiers in Britain  2,000 years ago. Smaller compact bags would have been used by men hundreds of years ago to carry their money and papers. Simple Gladstone bags were invented the mid-19th century as compact men's bags and continued to be very popular well into the 20th century. Structured rigid leather briefcases evolved from suitcases in the middle of the last century.
