Master craftsman Umaida restoring our wooden boxes
These beautiful rare old treasure chests are vintage barber boxes and shaving boxes from the state of Maharashtra in north-west India 60 years ago. Each folds out to reveal a mirror and either a single compartment or a series of smaller compartments. Barbers would roam the streets shaving customers and cutting their hair. Their compact boxes would be used to store their straight razors, blades, scissors, tools and accessories.
Of the all wooden boxes, trunks, coffers and boxes we hand pick these are the hardest to find. When we buy them they usually need to be repaired and have a new frame and mirror fitted. No two boxes are ever exactly the same. We leave the rest of the box as we as they have been found, So their patina and well-used character is not lost. Each one of Scaramanga’s unique old boxes has been lovingly restored to make it a perfect treasure box with a great worn look and feel which adds to their appeal. Sometimes they have engravings, images and symbols on their top. The more desirable boxes have decorative brass corners and edging. Some have drawers and a few have their original ornate moulded wooden frames.
Today they make great vintage jewellery boxes or trinket boxes for women, or cuff link or a coins and key boxes for men.
We stock a range of mini old brass padlocks.
