Scaramanga was founded in June 2006 by Carl Morenikeji. He had the vision of bringing back the iconic vintage leather satchel to the UK after discovering one in a dusty bazaar in a former British colonial desert outpost in north west India in 1999. He carefully researched the traditional techniques and tools used to hand-make leather satchels and by August 2006 Scaramanga’s first twelve traditional leather satchels had been created by leather workers from craft-based communities with a long tradition of making leather bags. Back then satchels were not really popular and it took three months before they had sold. In between selling leather satchels, Scaramanga also sold other handcrafted and vintage homewares including journals, and old wooden boxes and wooden bowls.
Fast-forward to April 2008 and the spare bedroom and attic room at home just could not hold the increasing flow of leather satchels and Scaramanga moved to a former blacksmith’s workshop in an old mill in Fife, Scotland. With more space Scaramanga moved into sourcing vintage and retro furniture and interiors.
Today Scaramanga is a renowned leather satchel supplier sourcing bags from experienced established leather satchel makers. Most our satchels and other leather bags are made by a family run business established 75 years ago. Our traditional leather satchels are still made the same way a leather bag would have been made 80 years ago in Britain. The high quality vegetable tanned leather is hand cut from patterns and expertly pieced together by experienced leather-workers using traditional tools and techniques without a hint of modern machinery or hi tech finishing to create a beautiful leather satchel. If you would like to know more about how our bags are made read our 'Meet The Maker Blog'.
Our leather bags, furniture and other products are all fairly sourced, directly from unique and traditional craft-based families and small enterprises.
Also specialising in furniture, wooden chests and travel trunks, we stock items from the turn of the 20th century, right up to the exuberant, quality conscious 1970s. Scaramanga also often re-invents classic bag designs to give pieces a fresh appeal.
We now employ seven people in what is always a very busy office, store and warehouse. During the week Dee manages the team, supported by Graeme in the warehouse, Sharon managing our finances and Katiuscia managing our leather bags, while Abi takes over at the weekends.
Scaramanga is slightly hidden on the outskirts of Cupar, heading towards St Andrews. Once found, customers are usually pleasantly surprised to discover a store not filled with the usual mid century design clichés, but a wide selection of unique leather bags and interiors that they have probably never seen before, and are unlikely to see again.
Carl and his team spend long hours sourcing Scaramanga’s diverse items from far and wide, taking regular buying trips to scour India. They also purchase stock from a variety of sources in the UK. Carl and his small team work hard to stay ahead of trends.
